Summary
Kiwi Edge is a ruler designed to mitigate slipping while cutting. Its shape brings the grip, measuring scale, and cutting edge together as one tool rather than treating a ruler as a flat strip held down by hand.
The design explores an arched profile that directs downward pressure toward the edges, with recessed curves and tactile reference points to guide hand placement. The source material documents acrylic and stamped-metal versions, proposed in 12-inch and 18-inch lengths. Cameron Chateauneuf holds a patent on the product.
Project record
01 / Overview
A product-design investigation into the relationship between the hand, the ruler, and the cutting surface. Kiwi Edge combines measurement and a cutting guide with geometry intended to improve grip and reduce movement during a cut.
02 / The idea
The central idea is to use the ruler's form to help manage pressure. An arched cross-section directs force toward the edges, while shaped grip areas give the hand a clearer place to rest. Stability and hand placement become part of the object itself.
03 / What I did
I developed the ruler concept and its ergonomic geometry, explored material and manufacturing options, and documented the design through sketches, product renderings, and feature studies. The project also resulted in a patent on the product.
04 / How it works
The cambered profile is designed to distribute downward force to the ruler's edges. Recessed curves, thumb-support wings, and tactile reference points explore how the hand can hold the tool securely. The documented designs include metric and imperial scales, a stainless steel cutting edge, and proposed 12-inch and 18-inch lengths.
An acrylic version explores injection molding and number magnification; a later study investigates stamped metal and laser-etched measurement markings. These are documented design and manufacturing directions, not a claim that every version entered production.
05 / Development studies
The early sketches test finger guards, non-slip inserts, folding elements, and possible integration with a cutting mat. Later drawings bring the focus back to the ruler's own profile: camber, tactile grip, and an edge that can serve as a cutting guide.
The archive preserves these alternatives as part of the development process. Material selection, tooling, and manufacturing were still being explored in the supplied project documents.
06 / Patent
I hold a patent on Kiwi Edge. This entry documents the product and its design development; the patent number and dates are not included in the available source material.
