01 / 02Jnet — software interface

Summary

Jnet is a custom design tool developed from the craft and fabrication logic of large-scale net-making. Rather than treating software as a generic geometry generator, the project translated the physical rules of how nets are constructed, connected, tensioned, and fabricated into a digital design environment. The work sits between computational design and craft knowledge, using software to make specialized material expertise available during the design process.

Project record

01 / Overview

Custom software for designing complex net structures using the fabrication logic and constraints of physical net-making.

02 / The idea

A useful design tool should understand not only the geometry being drawn, but also how that geometry will eventually be made.

03 / What I did

Lead development, computational design, fabrication research, workflow design, and translation of net-making knowledge into digital design rules.

04 / How it works

Fabrication relationships are embedded into the design process so geometric decisions can reflect the behavior, construction, and assembly of the finished net rather than being resolved only after a form has been designed.
